Thanks in large part to a certain little green guy, the Star Wars film franchise is packed with inspiration.
Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.
What successful small business owner hasn’t applied that concept (with or without quoting Yoda) about 317 times in their entrepreneurial journey?
We rounded up a bunch of the best Yoda quotes back in the day, but there are plenty of great lines from other Star Wars characters too.
In honor of Star Wars Day, let’s dig deeper for more small business inspiration.
Here are five Star Wars quotes for entrepreneurs and small business owners. (No Yoda-isms allowed!)
1. “In my experience there’s no such thing as luck.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi (Tweet this)
Creativity. Talent. Work ethic. These are the things we as small business owners tend to credit for our success.
When Han Solo attempts to discredit Luke’s progress with a light saber in A New Hope, Obi-Wan dismisses the slacker’s accusation immediately. He knows that we win or lose by working hard, tapping into our personal skills, and aligning ourselves to a master plan.
2. “This bounty hunter is my kind of scum. Fearless and inventive.” – Jabba the Hutt (Tweet this)
Talk about game respect game.
In Return of the Jedi, we have the head of a large (albeit sketchy as hell) business empire appreciating the entrepreneurial qualities that have gotten so many of us to where we are today.
Starting a small business takes courage and creativity. Leia, in bounty hunter costume, displayed both in negotiating a better price for Chewbacca.
3. “I am altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.” – Darth Vader (Tweet this)
Oh, poor foolish Landor Calrissian. He thought he’d struck a killer deal to keep the Empire out of Cloud City.
Unfortunately for him, and Han Solo, and Leia and Chewbacca, and basically everyone around him, the terms of the deal just kept getting worse and worse in The Empire Strikes Back.
Lando’s problem? He had no leverage. He was a small player trying to negotiate with the most powerful entity in the Galaxy. Keep your future lack of leverage in mind when considering relationships with large suppliers, distributors, and buyers.
4. “I’ve never had the luxury of political opinions.” – Jyn Erso (Tweet this)
When asked why he refused to comment on social issues or endorse political candidates, NBA star Michael Jordan replied “Republicans buy sneakers too.”
Jordan wanted to sell sneakers. In Rogue One, Jyn Erso just wanted to survive. Making a public commitment to one side of a heated political issue didn’t serve either objective.
Would it serve you in growing your business? Maybe. Maybe not. Just think it through first.
5. “I’m one with the Force. The Force is with me.” – Chirrut Îmwe (Tweet this)
Building a business is hard. You face long hours, financial fluctuations, and difficult decisions.
When the going gets really tough, a go-to affirmation or visualization will remind you why you took the risk to start your own business in the first place.
When I become overwhelmed, I turn to the serenity prayer. In Rogue One, semi-Jedi Chirrut repeated the mantra above.
When the bills pile up and there’s no vacation in sight, what words will you use to power your business and yourself forward? Maybe a Yoda-ism will help.
